How Seniors Can Take Care of Their Heart

Every February, people across the country, both old and young, place a special emphasis on hearts. Of course, Valentine’s Day makes us think of love and sweethearts, but we’re talking about doing more for our hearts than just spreading the love.

Taking good care of your heart can serve you well when it comes to overall health and happiness. Heart health is important for everyone, especially seniors who may put more strain on their hearts as they age. Since cardiovascular disease is a leading cause of deaths across the nation, work on protecting and caring for your heart.

Get Your Heart Pumping

Aim to exercise at least five days a week for the best benefit for your heart. We don’t mean you need to run a marathon to reap the benefits – cardio, strength training, and stretching will help. If you’ve led a sedentary lifestyle, start by walking around your yard or neighborhood. Start slowly and build from there.

Eat a Heart-Healthy Diet

Enjoying a diet that is rich in fresh fruits, vegetables, fiber, and plant-based protein, as well as low in saturated fats, sugars, and salt is key to keeping your heart strong and maintaining a healthy weight. Start by stocking your fridge full of the right foods. Fill up on veggies, fruit, nuts, whole grains, beans, and seeds while cutting back on the processed foods.

Minimize Stress

Though it may not be directly linked to heart disease, chronic stress can cause heart rate and blood pressure to rise, damage the artery walls and weaken the immune system. There are many ways you can reduce stress, such as talking to a loved one, meditating, exercising, helping others, and relying on in-home care.
